Maybe you didn’t know when it happened but you definitely should now. Years ago, my ex husband and I had our own teletext TV station for two weeks in The Netherlands.
Called Microtel it was one of the projects curated by ambientTV.net as part of VBI [voluptuously blinking eye] – a submission for the exhibition “Satellite of Love” . This project was presented by the 35th International Film Festival Rotterdam in association with Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art and the TENT Centre for Visual Arts.
It was pretty booyah and we stayed in the gallery for two weeks. Another period of time together that eroded our relationship. But it was also a really fab time. If you want good food – go to Rotterdam – BANGING. I also talking about being a TV junkie on TV [wonder whatever happened to the live show footage?] and gave a presentation with favourite clips from TV alongside one of the Fiennes clan. All good.
Anyway we had hundred of people submitting their work for us to broadcast on the teletext channel called Microtel. You can see the work and read all about it on our website here.
Now some people in Germany have had a very similar idea to celebrate teletext there. Using the software Lektrolab / Beige are hosting, ARD Text are calling for submissions for their celebration. Read about it below and submit. Telext is pretty fun.

30 years of Teletext in Germany / ARD Text: call for teletext art works on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of teletext in Germany
Teletext in Germany is turning 30 and ARD Text is celebrating this anniversary with an art exhibition. ARD Teletext is looking for art works which fathom/sound out the graphic and technical possibilities of the medium. This link shows an example: the teletext piece MJ by artist Paul B. Davis. The piece was also on view during the third part of the exhibition series Michael Jackson Doesn’t Quit at the Future Gallery in Kreuzberg which was supported by ARD Teletext.
The open call for visual and text-based works ends on August 1st, 2010. A jury decides which pieces will be shown on ARD Text in September. All winners will receive a limited edition teletext- 30th anniversary t-shirt. One main winner will be selected by the jury. The winner of the first prize will be invited to visit the editorial office of ARD Text in Potsdam (trip for 2 persons to Berlin (with DB coach, 2 overnight stays in a 3 star hotel w/ breakfast). Prizes cannot be transferred, substituted, or redeemed for any other prize.
Conditions of participation
The participants are licencing ARD Teletext to present/transmit the pieces on ARD Text (plus www.ardtext.de, www.daserste.de, rbb text and www.rbb.de) free of charge. Further copyrights remain with the artist.
The names of the winners will be published on ARD Text and www.ardtext.de.
Technical information
All works must meet the teletext standard. You can find free teletext graphic editors online which can be used to realize the art works. There is a short manual containing the most important technical details available for download from our website.
